This year has been a great one for me. I've found a way to eat that has resulted – finally – in a close-to-normal weight. My joints don't ache, I move freely and often, I'm not hungry or grumpy, I've dropped several clothing sizes (even shoes!) and I can wear costume jewelry again, after a metal allergy cleared up.
It hasn't been all sunshine and lollipops. Some things have been going on that I could never share here. I've used food to soothe my emotions a couple of times, but while that was formerly a go-to strategy and a coping mechanism I could count on, I'm more likely to walk it off now.
Or lose myself in a game (or 10) of Dots.
I look forward to my almost-daily walks. I feel as though something's missing when, for one reason or another, I have to skip a day.
I look forward to bacon-and-egg breakfasts, too. Who knew eating half your daily calories in fat could create such great weight-loss results? I'm totally sold on the primal way of eating. (The difference between paleo and primal is explained here, and after reading it I am much more in the primal category as far as my diet goes.)
While I'm puttering around in the kitchen today, I'm going to come up with at least a couple of goals for 2014. Calling them goals certainly works better for me than making resolutions. I can resolve until the cows come home, and I have over the years done just that. I can't quite put my finger on how the difference in nomenclature worked this year.
But it did, and since it did, I'm sticking with it.
My kitchen-puttering will consist of preparing a good-luck feast for my husband and me. We aren't big party people at any time, and especially not on New Year's Eve. We enjoy a quiet meal of ribs and kraut (my family's traditional end-of-year dinner), greens and carrot coins (for prosperity – who couldn't use more of that?) and Hoppin' John (the traditional southern dish for luck in the new year).
I want to thank both of you for sticking with me as I stepped WAY out of my comfort zone this year. I appreciate your comments so much. Blogging has been good for me for many years. I've made friends, learned so much, and gotten (and, hopefully, given) tons of support.
My husband thanks you, as well, since he doesn't have to listen to all my disjointed and sometimes crazy thoughts!
Have a safe and happy New Year's Eve. See you tomorrow.

Number 629, your order is ready
Today marks the end of 2012, and this is my 629th post for the year. You have NaBloPoMo to thank for the gift of one or more Knit. Run. Reap. Eat. posts nearly every freaking day of the year. Care to join me in 2013?
You have one day to think about it. Heh.
This week has gone very well. I've been under my calorie budget and I've met my activity goals every day. LoseIt's weeks begin on Monday (I wish the app would let you choose your own first day of the week, but oh, well. It's free! And if I'm missing this feature, I hope someone will let me know), so it's a fresh start in oh so many ways.
Monday is my scheduled no-exercise and eat-what-you-want day. Although today is going to be fairly temperate and I might go for a walk outside just because.
When I explained my plan to my husband (and believe me, I thought long and hard about explaining it to him), he hesitated for m a y b e a nanosecond before he said, "Well, do you mind if I have something to say about that?" Yes, as a matter of fact, I did mind, but that didn't stop him. When I further explained that "eating whatever I want" doesn't mean eating an entire pecan pie (which he's been known to do), but simply means adding an extra 200 to 400 calories one day a week, he was fine with that.
NOT THAT IT MATTERS!
(My body does not respond to weight-loss cues as his does. It is as baffling to him as it is to me that eating reasonable portions of healthful food and doing some kind of daily activity doesn't result in a slimmer me. That we both still have hope is, really, pretty amazing.)
So what's the eating plan for New Years Eve/Day? Tonight I'll honor my northern roots and make barbecued ribs, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes and carrot coins. (That should take care of the additional calorie prescription, don't you think? Heh.) Tomorrow we'll enjoy the southern tradition of Hoppin' John and greens. Which will probably be a bag of frozen spinach, since I don't think I'm going to make it to the market for kale or collards or turnip greens. (Click on the Mmmm. Mmmm. Good. tab at the top of the blog for links to a couple of good Hoppin' John recipes.)
May good luck follow me – and you – throughout the coming year. Thanks for sticking with me this year. And thanks in advance for being my cheerleaders in 2013. I've a feeling I'm going to need you.

I'm ready, how about you?
Sure feels like a good day to turn over a new leaf, start a new page, wipe the slate clean, yadda, yadda, yadda. Yeah, I know it’s the last day of 2008, not January One, but heck. We’ll get a head start on the rest of the pack.I’m already regretting my decision not to run any races next year. PQ posted a photo of her Indy medal and I want one! It’s tentatively on the schedule for 2010. I was listening to music in the car last night mentally figuring out which tunes were the right beat for my running pace. She’s Having a Baby by Dave Wakeling was one surprising fit.
I informed my husband that I was definitely planning to run a full marathon in 2011, for my 60th birthday. I think he turned three shades of white. He was hoping my taking a year off would quell the urge to run more long-distance races. Hah! This is working just like depriving me of food: if sugar’s on the forbidden list, I want it even more.
He and I have walked outside the past three days during some unseasonably balmy weather. Today? I doubt we’ll be out there. Winter is roaring back with whipping winds and temperatures back down in the 40s (with overnight temps in the teens – brrr!).
If 2009 is anything like 2008, I might jump off a bridge. My father had more than his share of serious illnesses (and called us yesterday with this news: “The culture came back; I have MRSA.” But it’s still 2008, so it doesn’t get counted for next year!), my husband’s mother was hospitalized twice and my best friend died. I watched our retirement account shrink as my waistline grew, and I didn’t set a PR in Richmond. The good stuff? Three healthy baby boys, born May 12 and thriving.
I need to actively search for the good stuff, every day, and I think I’ll resurrect Project 365, with that as a loose theme. While I always tried to take interesting photos, by mid-March I was just going through the motions. Perhaps having a purpose will help me stick with it in 2009. (And I’m not going to make myself post a new photo every day, since I know alreadyrightnow that I won’t be at my computer from January 2 until January 12.)
Happy New Year’s Eve. I’m not the party-going type; I’m turning into my grandmother, who never missed a year-end ball drop at Times Square via television. Actually I’m worse than my grandmother: I think I’ve gone to bed early every year since the calendar switched from 1999 to 2000.
Because, really, it’s just another day. But so full of promise. A good night’s sleep is a great way to get a good start.
